CHIROPRACTIC CARE

Chiropractic adjustments restore proper mobility to joints that have become dysfunctional, restoring normal mobility, alleviating pain allowing tissues to heal, and improving nervous system function.

Chiropractic care is neither new nor experimental and enjoys a long history of providing relief and promoting health. The word chiropractic is derived from the Greek words “cheir” and “praktikos” meaning “done by hand.” Chiropractic is an overall way of looking at the human body. It's based on the understanding that the body is self-sustaining and self-healing.

The body is completely controlled by the brain through its connection via the spinal cord and the vast networks of nerves that make up the body. If two or more vertebrae in the spine are not in proper alignment and their movement has become dysfunctional (a condition called a subluxation), a reduction in communication between the brain and the rest of the body may occur. Subluxations can be sustained by a single traumatic event, such as improperly lifting a heavy object; through accumulated repetitive stresses, such as sitting at a desk for extended periods of time; or even through chemical or emotional stress. In any case, subluxations can cause both inflammation and pain for the sufferer and when the nervous system is not functioning at its peak, the overall performance of the human body is lacking.

The main therapeutic procedure performed by chiropractors to remove subluxations is joint manipulation, also known as the chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractic adjustments restore proper mobility to joints that have become dysfunctional. Manipulation of the dysfunctional joints restores normal mobility, thereby alleviating pain, allowing tissues to heal, and improving nervous system function.

Trained to assess and treat patients holistically, chiropractors provide safe and effective conservative healthcare. Care actually begins when the doctor of chiropractic takes the time to listen to each patient and acquire a thorough understanding of their unique set of circumstances. After assessing a patient’s condition, the doctor develops a treatment plan that will optimize the inherent recuperative powers of the body in order to restore and maintain health. In addition to in-office care, patients are often given specific recommendations to enhance their body’s ability to heal itself. These recommendations may include postural awareness, proper lifting techniques, stretching and strengthening exercises, ergonomic improvements, nutritional supplements, and dietary or lifestyle changes. A good chiropractor does more than just “crack” stiff necks or sore low backs, he or she helps improve the patient’s overall well-being.

In the chiropractic world, drugs and medicine are not utilized as a form of treating a patient. While supplementation and nutrition are almost always a part of the bigger picture, drugs and prescriptions can be viewed as band-aids to treat symptoms rather than going to the source and treating the real problem.

It is often perceived that the chiropractor is solely here to treat back and neck pain, this is simply a small piece of what the profession really is capable of handling. While chiropractors neither diagnose nor treat "disease", they not only treat soft and hard tissue problems such as sciatica and joint pain, but are largely called on to deal with more significant issues. Some of these issues include fibromyalgia, allergies, insomnia, headaches, and many more.

Maintenance Care
Many conditions can be relieved through chiropractic. The best way to treat these conditions is to prevent them before they even start. Regular chiropractic visits can help to prevent physical problems and injuries from occurring. Other potential benefits of regular chiropractic visits are increased flexibility and mobility, a higher level of energy, improved posture, a more effective immune system, better circulation, and an overall better feeling of well-being.
