So unless you’ve been living in a cave (or still under your bed with two masks) for the last few weeks you are no doubt aware of the conflagration happening in India as the country has been “consumed” by the evil coronarvirus. In case you’re not hip to the jive, here are some of the headlines you’ve missed (caps always mine for emphasis):
“India COVID-19 death toll SURGES past 300K”
“India records 300,000 Covid deaths as pandemic RAGES”
“My whole family was infected in India’s DEVESTATING CORONAVIRUS SURGE. Not all survived.”
“The pandemic is OUT OF CONTROL in India”
And so on and so forth. Suffice it to say, everyone “knew” that within just a matter of weeks, every living organism in India would be dead. More evidence of just how bad this COVID thing really is. But something funny happened on the way to the forum. Suddenly, those headlines disappeared. In the last two weeks here are the headlines out of India:
On May 21, the headlines blared, “India asks social media firms to remove reference to 'Indian variant' of coronavirus”
And on May 31, the world complied as, “The coronavirus variant discovered in India has a new name: Delta.”
Well, thank goodness we got that out of the way. We were inundated with this PANIC PORN end-of-the-world virus that was “raging out of control,” and “consuming” India, but then just a few weeks later, we’re focused on what name by which we call the “Indian variant”. Whew, close call with that one. Problem solved.
Before we get to the actual SCIENCE AND DATA in India, let’s take a look at some other PANIC PORN that’s been thrown our way in case the imminent death of 1.4 billion people wasn’t enough for you.
Not to be outdone by the “novel” coronavirus, a group of little fellas called mucormycetes, which are fungal spores that cause a disease called Mucormycosis, decided they wanted airtime, too. And the media has obliged with headlines like:
“Mucormycosis: The 'black fungus' MAIMING Covid patients in India”
“Covid-19: black fungus KILLS MORE THAN 300 in India as other countries report cases”
“'Black fungus' STRIKES FEAR in India as Covid deaths pass 300,000”
“‘Black fungus’ is creating a whole other HEALTH EMERGENCY for Covid-stricken India”
And so on and so forth. So in case you weren’t scared enough of COVID (and by golly who isn’t?), you can now start being afraid of the “Black Fungus” (please hear old-timey silent movie organ music in your head as you read that – go ahead, try it, it will enrich the experience). You read reports that tell you “…the TSUNAMI of cases occurring in the wake of Covid-19 is of an UNIMAGINABLE SCALE.” Never mind that “Even before the pandemic, rates of mucormycosis in India were estimated to be about 70 TIMES HIGHER than in the rest of the world.” And by the way, I’ll wager my Aunt Tillie’s false teeth that nobody ever heard of this “Black Fungus” (which was already 70 times higher in India) before this. Any takers?
Well that’s all good creative writing and stuff, except here’s the actual data on the “Black Fungus” (hey don’t forget the old-timey music). As of June 2, 2021, “India has had about 12,000 cases and more than 300 deaths from black fungus in the past few months, with several states affected.” That’s a population case rate for black fungus of about 0.0009%, or nine ten-thousandths of one percent, with a population fatality rate of about 0.00002%, or two one-hundred thousandths of one percent. A “TSUNAMI” of “UNIMAGINABLE SCALE”? Well, potato, potahto…
Then you have the interesting report from back in late December telling us “Covid-19 Was CONSUMING India, Until Nearly Everyone Started Wearing Masks”. This piece of propaganda tells us how India was being “consumed” back in late summer, but then tells us how India emerged triumphant and vanquished its foe by having everyone use masks…bullocks! Think I’m an anti-mask, science-denying crackpot? OK, then let’s get to the actual SCIENCE AND DATA.
As to this last headline, do you see any “consumption” back in August and September? As of the end of December, when the piece referenced above was written, the population case rate in India stood at about 0.7%, and the death rate was about 0.01%. CONSUMING? Well, tomato, tomahto… And if masks were so effective, and we’re told how pretty much everyone in India fell in line and masked up, how do you explain April? Is it possible the mass masking CAUSED the “surge” in April? Silly, I know. But no sillier than the assertion that masks stop the viral spread. And speaking of April, just look at the graph. Cases shot up (everyone was going to die) and just as quickly fell. In fact cases have dropped some 58% in just the last three weeks or so. How do you explain that? Why did it fall? I thought the virus was “consuming” India like a swarm of locusts in an Egyptian wheat field. What happened? Why, EXACTLY, did the tide turn? And before you scream “Vaccines you moron!” only about 3% of India is fully vaccinated with about 12% having had at least one dose. And this is one of the poorest, dirtiest countries on earth, so how do you explain the case rise and fall? With all due respect, the stories about dead bodies floating down the River Ganges have much more to do with poor nutrition and sanitation and weak infrastructure and governance than it does with the apocalyptic nature of the coronavirus. And what happened to all those people telling you how “out of control” things were in India? How do they explain what’s happening now? The answer is, of course, they don’t. But they will continue to feed you little ditties like, “Highly contagious India COVID variant SPREADING RAPIDLY in the US”. So get back under your bed!
Can’t you see it yet? If you don’t understand by now that almost everything you think you “know” about this pandemic is hyperbolic, hysterical misinformation, and often outright lies, then you are lost.
