So I got myself involved in a discussion on my daughter’s college parents page and was really shocked to see how many people absolutely “know” how dangerous the ‘rona is and how we MUST mandate a “booster shot” for all college kids to keep them “safe”. I hope anyone who reads this will pass it on to friends who may have kids in college or to the college kids themselves who, double shockingly, seemingly largely agree with vax mandates for their own “safety”. I realize that is an unfair statement as I can only go by what kids post on this type of thread and I will assume most kids who disagree with the vax mandates (which I hope against hope is most) are keeping their mouths shut so as not to be ostracized by their communities. This, by the way, poses a HUGE problem for the future of this country in my opinion. Anyway, the actual SCIENCE AND DATA is pretty straightforward on this topic. Here it is:
Right now, after almost two full years of this pandemic, the CDC counts a total of 5,034 people from the ages of 18-29 as having died under the column of “All Deaths involving COVID-19”. There is somewhere around 55,000,000 young people in this cohort. That gives you a population fatality rate, the “chance” that you will die from COVID, of around 0.009%. Let’s go crazy and round that up to a chance of a significant interaction with COVID (hospitalization or death) of around 0.01%, or one one-hundredth of one percent. That is effectively a RISK OF ZERO. If a risk of one one-hundredth of one percent scares you, you may have too much time on your hands and you’re watching too much mainstream media PANIC PORN. Stop doing that.
Let’s also realize a few things about that “risk”. First, that 5,034 number includes “ALL” deaths “INVOLVING” COVID-19. As has been well documented, essentially NONE of these people actually died “from” COVID and there are almost NO cases of an otherwise non-compromised person in this age cohort dying from a coronavirus infection. Perhaps none at all. I am in no way diminishing those deaths, but they are the extremely rare exception and SHOULD NOT be used to dictate what we do to all young people.
Second, as COVID severity is exquisitely sensitive to age, it would be safe to assume that the lower 1/3 of this cohort (that would be our college age kids) is not responsible for 1/3 of the 5,034 deaths as the death tolls would increase with increasing age. So your healthy college age kid’s risk is actually something below, probably far below, that 0.01% risk.
Third, also as has been well documented, the Omicron variant is far less threatening as to severity of illness than previous strains, and as such, the “risk” of hospitalization or death is reduced further still. So when you consider all of these factors, your kid’s risk is probably more accurately somewhere around 0.005% or five one-thousandths of one percent. Please just think about that.
Additionally, the 5,034 deaths attributed to COVID account for about 4% of “Deaths from all Causes” for the age cohort of 18-29. That means that 96% of the deaths in this age group were from something other than some "involvement" with COVID. So it would seem we have a lot more to worry about concerning what might pose a risk to our college age kids than COVID. In 2019 for the age cohort of 15-24 there were around 6,000 suicides. That’s in one year, not the two years for the 5,034 COVID deaths figure, so we’ve probably had TWO TO THREE TIMES MORE kids commit suicide than have died from COVID in the past two years. And heaven only knows what that figure actually is for 2020 or 2021.
So just so we’re clear. For almost every single one of us, our college age kid’s “risk” from COVID is ZERO. As you cannot improve on a risk of zero, mandating booster shots (or even vaccines at all) for this age cohort cannot, by the laws of mathematics, impart to your child any protection at all. The same applies to masks or social distancing or anything else. We are destroying our children’s college experience and probably damaging many of them for life with all this hysterical, unfounded fear-mongering mania. This is supposed to be the most glorious, exciting, fun time of their lives and we have utterly destroyed it for them. For NOTHING. And perhaps worst of all, we continue to do it with no end in sight. I know many out there really believe you “know” the “realities” of this virus, but if you're in favor of what's going on on our college campuses, you don’t. You have been misled. I’m begging you to gather up whatever rational brain cells you have left and look at the actual data. The damage we have done to our children to “protect” them from an imaginary boogeyman (and that is EXACTLY what it is to them) will, I believe, go down as one of the darkest episodes in the history of this country and the world. And any society that would impart damage - physical, psychological, educational, emotional - to their children in pursuit of “protecting” itself is not, again in my opinion, a society worth saving. Shame on us all.
