So an article was published today in USA Today with the headline “Pediatricians say it's a 'no-no' to vaccinate children under 12 against COVID-19 – even though it's now legal” In the article the author writes (caps mine for emphasis) “Children under 12 have not yet been approved to receive any COVID-19 vaccine, for the simple reason that it has not yet been proven SAFE and EFFECTIVE for this group…Plus, while everyone 12 and up is given the SAME DOSE, a child of 5 years is LIKELY to need a SMALLER AMOUNT of vaccine than someone 55.” We'll get to the "safe and effective" part in a moment, but I’m always curious as to what kind of parent is offering up their child to Big Pharma so they can experiment on the kid to figure out the “right dose” of a heretofore untested drug with unknowable adverse effects. And how is it that a 12 year old, 90 pound, prepubescent girl is getting the same "dose" as a 300 pound 55 year old man? Oh well, moving on.
Anyway, let’s start with the predicate of what we are being told now, which is that while the fully vaccinated are by-and-large protected from serious illness or death from COVID, they are essentially just as likely to become infected, carry the same viral load, or have mild symptoms as the unvaccinated. By the way, let’s clear something up. No vaccine protects you from being “infected”. It’s not like someone sticks a needle in your arm and you are instantly surrounded by an impenetrable bubble that prevents the bugs from getting into you (although I’m sure there are many who would run over their own grandma to sign up for that in a heartbeat). The vaccine just (hopefully) allows for a milder course of the illness caused by the germ that infects you.
Next, concerning vaccine "effectiveness" and children, it is important to understand that the risk of death from COVID-19 for a school-aged child (through high school) sits at about 0.0005%. That's five ten-thousandths of one percent. That's ZERO risk. By the very definition of the immutable laws of the universe, you CANNOT improve on a risk of ZERO. Therefore, this vaccine, with UNKNOWABLE long-term effects, CANNOT provide to your child any protection. For ages 18-29 the risk is about 0.006% (six one-thousandths of one percent). Again, that is ZERO and therefore CANNOT be improved upon. The same goes for masks by the way and I will be posting an extensive piece in the next week on why our children should not be forced to wear masks in school. Interestingly, however, in this USA Today piece the author reports "While we wait for vaccines, we have measures that are effective," Dr. Bob Frenck, lead researcher for Pfizer’s vaccine studies and director of Vaccine Research Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, said via email. "Masks can decrease risk of infection by about 85% and appropriate distancing can decrease the risk by about 82%...While the side effects [of the vaccine] are SHORT TERM and relatively mild," Frenck said, "if you can avoid, or lessen, side effects and still get the same immune response, that is the course to take." First, the comment on masks is just an outright lie – more on that next week. Second, what exactly is “appropriate distancing” and where is the data to support that assertion? Third, pay attention to the language. While the routine “side effects” (aches, fatigue, fever) of the vaccine appear to be “SHORT TERM” the longer term, potential “adverse events” of a new technology (Pfizer and Moderna) which has never before been used on a population level are, again, unknowable. Anyone who tells you different is lying.
Anyway, the take home message here is that everyone is entitled to enact their own healthcare decisions (or at least we used to be) as they see fit for their own circumstance, but think twice before you vaccinate your child (this goes for anybody who is now, or someday will be, of child-bearing age). There is mathematically no benefit of the vaccine to a young person (at the very least grammar school or high school age), and as far as harm of the vaccine goes, we may someday reap the whirlwind of our arrogance and foolhardiness. Everything in life is risk/benefit. With essentially zero benefit, the risk is infinite.
