The Case of the Dakotas

COVID PANIC PORN ALERT

2/2/21

THE CASE OF THE DAKOTAS

So I posted a quick blurb earlier today showing that the Daily New Case count in the U.S. is down some 42% in the last three weeks. That’s great news but my question was why isn’t that the headline everywhere? Why are the headlines still blasting PANIC PORN? Why do we see this push for two or three masks? Why this insane push for a vaccine for a virus against which you stand a 99.9% chance of not dying or even having a serious illness (0.4% cases worldwide considered serious or critical)? By the way, that vaccine is not intended, nor has ever been trialed, to protect you from death or serious illness, so there’s that. And what about all the talk of the evil new “variants” that are coming for us? Why exactly are those the headlines? As I alluded to in the aforementioned blurb, that reduction comes naturally and is not due to any behavioral changes by our fellow citizens. It has nothing to do with vaccines or who sits in the Oval Office or who’s locked down or who’s not, or how many masks you wear. It’s the natural progression of a seasonal virus. And once again let me remind you there was no “Post-Thanksgiving Surge” or “Post-Christmas Surge on a Surge” or anything else. As I have said many times, the virus is gonna virus. Period. And the thought that we could somehow mitigate its progression was and is arrogant and foolhardy.

For some interesting insight on the PANIC PORN industry (and there are literally hundreds if not thousands of examples), let’s hop into our Wayback Machine (shout our Mr. Peabody) and go back to November when the end of the world due to our lack of submitting to our overlords’ demands was evidenced in North and South Dakota where “The Dakotas are ‘as bad as it gets anywhere in the world’ for COVID -19” was the headline in USA TODAY on November 14, 2020. This headline was representative of the PANIC PORN at the time. If you watched any television or read any newspaper during the latter part of 2020 you surely know who Kristi Noem is. She’s the stupid, selfish, science-denying Grandma-killing Governor of South Dakota who had the audacity (or temerity or chutzpah – your choice) to refuse to impose mask or lockdown mandates on the citizens of her state. Now this article in USA TODAY was published within hours of North Dakota’s Governor Doug Burgum finally, after “months of resisting a statewide mask mandate” issued a mask mandate and restrictions on business capacities because he finally realized the Apocalypse was upon him and his fellow North Dakotans. He was obviously much smarter (even though Republican) and much more caring than his counterpart, She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named (shout out Voldemort) to the South. Now North Dakota might just survive. Blah, blah, blah. Read the article if you dare, it’s both aggravating and amusing by the unbelievable language used to describe what was surely the end of the world as we know it (shout out R.E.M.) But the gist is “North and South Dakota now face a predictably tragic reality that health experts tell USA TODAY could have been largely prevented with earlier public health actions.” Heads up – who can identify the “magic words” in that sentence? Spoiler alert – they are “predictably” and “could have been”.

But what really happened in North and South Dakota? Let’s take a look. First, you should know that the metrics of both states are very similar. Population, total cases, total deaths, and testing are all about the same. More importantly, what happened after Governor Burgum came to his senses and joined the good guys in trying to control the virus? Let’s see.

First, here’s North Dakota’s Daily New Case count:

Notice how the mask and restriction order came at the apex of the curve. As we have discussed before there’s no way the decline beginning immediately subsequent to the November 14 order could have been in response to said order. Also notice there is no indication in the line at about two weeks post-order (around December 1) of any change (accelerated decline) in case count, proving the order had no effect on the “predictably tragic reality” that supposedly was surely to come.

And what about that evil South Dakota?

Yes, I promise they are actually different graphs. PLEASE notice the same pattern. A peak at or about November 14, then a slow and steady decline irrespective of the lack of any mitigation implementations. Period. A few more cases and deaths in absolute numbers in South Dakota than North Dakota but actually, while South Dakota has about 5,500 less cases per million (122,500 vs 128,100) than North Dakota, South Dakota actually has a few more deaths per million (2,010 vs 1,866). Those extra deaths cannot be attributed to the unfettered, non-masked, non-restricted spread of the virus in South Dakota as they actually have fewer “cases” per million than North Dakota.

In any event, the almost identical case graphs (both pre and post mitigation orders) should tell you two things. One, stop listening to the PANIC PORN purveyors. Two, the virus is gonna virus and there’s pretty much nothing we can do about it. Except maybe, get healthy – exercise, improve your metabolic health through diet (stop eating crap) supplement with Vitamin D and then in the spring and summer get out in the sun; ya know, crazy things like that. Happy Groundhog Day
