So here I’ll ask the question, again, why schools are not fully open for full day with full class every day. I’ll also take the opportunity to compare two reports that came out at the same time regarding the “safety” of being in school and how one reports dispassionately on the actual SCIENCE AND DATA, and how the other is a tool of the PANIC PORN machine with all of its skewed “reporting” of the data. I’ve broken this discussion into two parts as the biggest complaint I get on these posts is that they’re too long. Well, actually the biggest complaint is that I’m a stupid, selfish, science-denying Grandma-killer, but that just hurts my feelings so I don’t like to talk about it. When that happens, I just look in the mirror and say "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me." (shout out Stuart Smalley) Anyway, on with Part 1.
First, we’ll look at a paper published back in mid February which details how there is absolutely no danger, by the actual numbers, whatsoever to either students or teachers being in school, full time, with no masks, and no social distancing, and no quarantining of “close contacts”, from the dreaded coronavirus. The study is entitled “Open Schools, Covid-19, and Child and Teacher Morbidity in Sweden” and was published in no less than the New England Journal of Medicine (not “Facts from your friends at QAnon”) on February 18, 2021. Let’s take a look.
A little background. In Sweden, where everyone was supposed to be dead by now because they didn’t lock down and mask up, children up to age 16 (their ninth grade) went to school as usual throughout this whole pandemic with, as stated above, no mitigation strategies aside from a suggestion to wash your hands. Now the numbers (caps mine for emphasis going forward).
“The number of deaths from any cause among the 1,951,905 children in Sweden…who were 1 to 16 years of age was 65 during the pre–Covid-19 period of November 2019 through February 2020 and 69 during 4 months of exposure to Covid-19 (March through June 2020)… From March through June 2020, a total of 15 children with Covid-19 (including those with MIS-C) were admitted to an ICU…Four of the children had an underlying chronic coexisting condition (cancer in 2, chronic kidney disease in 1, and hematologic disease in 1). NO CHILD WITH COVID-19 DIED.” MIS-C is multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children and is included in the COVID count because it’s “likely” related to COVID. And some quick math shows the risk of ICU admittance in these kids was 0.00075%. Rounded up, that’s eight ten-thousandths of one percent. I submit that no human on planet earth has ever concerned themselves with an eight ten-thousandths of one percent risk of anything. Ever.
So there were four more deaths in children ages 1 to 16 during the four month pandemic period than during the four month pre-pandemic period. That’s no statistical significance between the two observation groups. No risk to kids. Period. Let’s look at the risk to teachers, which is what teachers have been claiming is the reason they’re not in school full time.
“Data from the Public Health Agency of Sweden...showed that FEWER THAN 10 PRESCHOOL TEACHERS and 20 SCHOOLTEACHERS in Sweden received intensive care for Covid-19 up until June 30, 2020. As compared with other occupations (excluding health care workers), this corresponded to sex- and age-adjusted RELATIVE RISKS of 1.10 among preschool teachers and 0.43 among schoolteachers.” That means preschool teachers (kids 1-6 years old) had about the same risk as everyone else their age and sex in Sweden and the school teachers (kids 7-16 years old) had less than half the risk of everyone else. Half the risk. In school. Full time. No masks. No vaccines. How do you explain that?
So this study done in the real world (not some modeling garbage – we’ll see that next in Part 2) makes it crystal clear that there is no risk to kids OR teachers to be back in school full class, full time. And remember, this study in Sweden was without masks or distancing or quarantining or vaccines or anything. If you believe any of that nonsense actually provides any protection, then US kids and teachers have absolutely nothing to worry about. And yet, we see articles like this from US News and World Report “Teachers Union Switches Stance, Now Endorses CDC Guidance on School Reopenings” published April 12th in which we’re told “The head of the powerful American Federation of Teachers BLESSED the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's recent revision of social distancing in schools…” Blessed? Who can tell me why we need a teacher’s union to “bless” the advice of what is supposed to be the pre-eminent healthcare organization in the country if not the world? Remember this Sweden study came out six weeks ago (and this information had already been known for months from data all over the world). And while this statement "blesses" the CDC's distancing revision from six feet (for which there was never any scientific evidence) down to three feet (again, no science here), remember in Sweden there was no distancing observed. How’s school here going? By the way, let me say before you attack that I come from a family of school teachers: mother, three aunts, one cousin, so I appreciate how difficult and often thankless teaching can be. But someone needs to be held accountable for the sins we have committed against our children and for whatever those reasons are (above my pay grade), I think that blame lies squarely with the “powerful” teachers unions. Why not send this post to your Board of Ed or superintendent or mayor and ask EXACTLY why your kids are not in school full time. And while you’re at it, tell them to stop sending out those stupid notices every time somebody “tests positive”. It’s enough already.
